Practicing standing up with Parkinson’s patients

Getting up from a chair is not always easy for people with Parkinson’s due to the increasing stiffness of their muscles. In this video, physiotherapist Anke Ulbrich, member of ParkinsonNet Luxembourg, shows exercises on how to get up from a chair and to reach a standing position. "These exercices train the balance, strengthen the thigh muscles and promote the coordination of the trunk muscles," she explains in her video.

It is very important for people with Parkinson’s to maintain the mobility of their body as it contributes to preserve their quality of life. Therefore, the therapists of ParkinsonNet Luxembourg discuss individual exercises with their patients according to their capability and, ultimately, such regular training can help them to move safely and to be more confident in everyday life situations.

“I see patients both in my office and in their homes,” Anke reports. “I am working as a physiotherapist with neurologically affected people and try to develop an individual therapy adapted to the needs of the patient.”

Physiotherapy is only one of the different disciplines represented within ParkinsonNet Luxembourg. By combining exercises for balance and coordination with strategies from other disciplines such as occupational or speech therapy, optimal care can be ensured. This is also shown in the other videos of our YouTube channel.
