Parkinson's Fighter: Serena

I obtained my diploma as an educator in 2022 and I have been working at the centre "La Tulipe" since November 2023. I have always been interested in working in the social field, especially with the elderly. Working here combines these two interests perfectly, although I now know that Parkinson's can affect people of all ages.

Before I started here, like so many others, I had a lot of misconceptions about Parkinson's. I always thought it was just a movement disorder characterised by tremors. But in the five months I've been here, I've learnt a lot more about the disease, both through the talks we organise and, most importantly, by interacting with the people affected.

In the mornings I'm usually busy with administrative and organisational tasks. For example, I'm currently preparing for our first holiday trip since 2020. Everyone is really looking forward to that.  However, my main job is to accompany our guests to the various lectures or afternoon activities if they need my help, and to accompany them inside and outside the centre to ensure everyone's safety.

La Tulipe is a unique place where Parkinson's disease brings everyone together but is rarely the centre of conversation. It is so wonderful to see how people manage their lives with the disease and face the challenges with remarkable positivity. It's especially nice to see how many people are accompanied by their partners.

Our doors are open to everyone and we spend a lot of quality time together!
